A couple examining Andy Warhol's Elvis I and II at the Art Gallery of Ontario.

In the early 1960s, Andy Warhol turned to celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor as artistic subject matter.  Elvis Presley was one of Warhol's earliest subjects, one in which he revisited several times throughout his career.  In 1963 Warhol developed a 22 piece series called Elvis for a solo show following the great success of his Campbells Soup Cans series.

The image Warhol used for these Elvis works was taken from a publicity still from the 1960s film Flaming Star.
