Andrew Bonnycastle's painting of a woman at the Art Gallery of Ontario admiring Franklin Carmichael's painting of Lake Superior

North Shore Traveller

A tourist admires Franklin Carmichael's 1927 painting North Shore, Lake Superior at the Art Gallery of Ontario.  Carmichael began honing his artistic skills at his father's Carriage shop in Orillia, ON and later as a commercial artist.  In his paintings, you can see the influence of this design heavy background with bold stylization and an emphasis on depth and three dimensional space.  Carmichael made his first artistic trip north to the shores of Lake Superior with fellow artists, Lawren Harris and A.Y. Jackson in 1925.  He found the area inspiring and Lake Superior became a consistent theme in his work.
