A woman listening to the audio tour at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City strolls past Swiss artist Max Bill's painting Expansion in Four Directions.  Influenced by the works of Piet Mondrian, Bill explored the use of shape and geometric division of colour in a similar way.  He used math as a neutralizing compositional device in an attempt to create pictures that transcend personal artistic expression and achieve universal communication.
